No matter what your age, YMCA swim lessons will build internal strength and positive values that guide choices and decisions, all while having fun in the water. Both youth and adults gain a tremendous sense of self-worth when they learn swim and improve aquatic skills. The YMCA wants to help everyone learn water safety and confidence in their swimming ability. To give each child ample attention, we limit our pre-school swim lessons (any level) to a 5:1 participant to instructor ratio and we limit our school-age swim lessons (any level) to a 6:1 ratio.
In Swim Starter classes, parents* and children learn together. Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.
*We define parent broadly to include all adults with primary responsibility for raising children, including biological parents, adoptive parents, guardians, stepparents, grandparents, or any other type of parenting relationship.
In Swim Basics level classes, students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:
- Swim, float, swim – sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit
- Jump, push, turn, grab
In Swim Strokes level classes, students will master the fundamentals, learn additional water safety skills, build stroke technique, develop skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.
SWIM TEAM PREP
This class is for youth who want to join a swim team in the future or who just love the sport of swimming and want to continue with it as their form of exercise. It is an introduction to how swim teams work and a great opportunity for swimmers to build endurance and develop stroke techniques that will better prepare them if they choose to pursue competitive swimming. There are so many benefits to swimming, including having a lifesaving skill, great exercise, and a lifelong skill. Swimming teaches responsibility, discipline, patience, and compassion.
Swimmers must be able to swim the length of a 25-yard pool and complete a 45-minute practice. This program is for swimmers aged 5-14.
